We take diversion when and where we can.
Make the most of every grumpy day.
Grasp thrill and desire with both hands
And, clutching, pray that it won’t slip away.
Drown out stark and sombre reality.
Avoid the harsh and garish light of day.
Then we drift in fog of numbing sea,
Memorialise each empty shade of grey.
And when fickle pleasure drops us hard
Bruised and battered, up we strive to stand
Everything is tainted, mad and marred
Then ‘round again, damaged heart in hand.

Writing 201: Poetry
Assignment — Day 5:
Prompt: Fog
Form: Elegy
Device: Metaphor
Personal note: Lately I have given much thought to that lifestyle in which one lives in constant pursuit of happiness and self-fulfilment. I have several dear friends who live for laughs, doing whatever feels good, consequences be damned. The trouble is they often leave others hurt in their wake. And they themselves do not come out unscathed. Quite a morose topic.
This poem is not complete. It not only needs a good polish, it needs a metaphor. 🙂

Not my favourite assignment or poem. But something that touches my heart. Thank you!

A very different voice from what you typically produce. Good writers can “speak” their voice through various forms and phrases. Great writers are not limited to a single voice and can hide behind their words that sound nothing like their words.
That is a really convoluted way of saying you’re a great writer.

Wow. Thanks for that. You are really too generous and very kind.
(Speaking of voices, I was privileged to attend a talk by Barbara Kingsolver Friday evening. She and her husband are currently touring South Africa. It was FASCINATING to listen to her talk about how she writes and prepares her novels. Prodigal Summer is currently in production and she just signed the release of Poisonwood Bible. It will be interesting to see these novels on the screen.)

This is very well written! And you most certainly have metaphors here!! One grasps a steering wheel with both hands, not a thrill; people only get dropped from airplanes, not from fickle pleasure; and, trust me, if your heart is literally in your hand, you ain’t standing anywhere!

The poem as heart. What else does it need?
