Bright red beans
with little black eyes, what
do you see?

Shall you grow,
Little uMsinsi, tall and strong
like your ancestors,

Roots digging deep
like arms to cradle an
ancient Zulu king,

Or shall you
stay, bitter like ash, to
bring me luck?

Day 4

note on Erythrina lysistemon:
This tree is an important one in Zululand. “uMsinsi” in isiZulu, it was planted over the graves of Zulu kings. The bright red flowers are striking, appearing on the branches before the new leaf growth. The tree produces pods, within which are bright red peas often referred to as Lucky Beans.
